MGNREGA and Rural Employment: Assessing its Effectiveness and Future Prospects in India

Abstract

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), launched in 2005, stands as one of India’s most ambitious social security initiatives aimed at combating rural poverty and unemployment. This research evaluates the effectiveness of MGNREGA in addressing these issues and explores its broader implications for rural development. By analyzing secondary data, field reports, and case studies from various regions, the study assesses MGNREGA’s impact on employment generation, poverty alleviation, and social inclusion, particularly for marginalized communities. Despite its successes in creating rural employment opportunities and enhancing local infrastructure, challenges such as delayed wage payments, corruption, and implementation inefficiencies persist. The paper highlights the regional disparities in the program's effectiveness and presents recommendations for optimizing its delivery through technological integration, better governance, and stronger community involvement. Looking forward, MGNREGA’s future lies in adapting to the changing needs of rural India, ensuring its sustainability, and maximizing its potential to empower rural populations and contribute to economic growth.
