Urban sprawl represents one of the most significant contemporary threats to environmental sustainability and ecosystem integrity worldwide. This research paper examines the multifaceted impacts of urban sprawl on local ecosystems, analyzing the mechanisms through which uncontrolled urban expansion affects biodiversity, habitat connectivity, and ecological processes. Through a comprehensive review of current literature and case studies, this study identifies key environmental consequences including habitat fragmentation, loss of biodiversity, alteration of hydrological cycles, and degradation of ecosystem services. The analysis reveals that urban sprawl creates cascading effects throughout ecological systems, with impacts extending far beyond the immediate development footprint. The paper evaluates mitigation strategies including smart growth policies, green infrastructure development, and ecosystem-based urban planning approaches. Findings suggest that while urban sprawl poses significant environmental challenges, implementing sustainable urban development practices can substantially reduce negative impacts on local ecosystems. The research concludes that addressing urban sprawl requires integrated approaches combining land use planning, environmental conservation, and sustainable development principles to protect ecosystem integrity while accommodating urban growth.
