Indian Knowledge Systems and Sustainable Education: Integrating Indigenous Wisdom with Global Learning

Abstract

The integration of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) with sustainable education offers a transformative approach to addressing contemporary educational, environmental, and social challenges. Rooted in holistic learning, ethical values, ecological consciousness, and experiential pedagogy, IKS provides enduring principles that complement global frameworks for sustainable development. The convergence of indigenous Indian wisdom with modern educational practices, emphasizing its relevance in fostering critical thinking, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and lifelong learning. It examines the philosophical foundations of IKS, including the Gurukul tradition, value-based education, and traditional ecological knowledge, alongside international approaches such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study highlights how integrating indigenous knowledge with digital technologies, interdisciplinary curricula, and learner-centered pedagogies can create inclusive and resilient education systems.
